Idaho Construction Outlook

From 2011 to 2021, Idaho’s construction industry nearly doubled employment, increasing by 94%, or 28,525 new jobs. This is the highest percentage increase among Idaho’s industry sectors. During the Great Recession, the construction industry slowed nationwide and in Idaho.  There are hints of slowdowns in the single-family home development specialty. The decreased demand for a new or existing property can be directly attributed to the federal funds rate hikes in 2022.

In Idaho, mortgage payments have climbed at a faster pace than individual or household income and were driven by a population spike during the epidemic that produced a demand for homes that outstripped availability, boosting prices dramatically.

Idaho Current Situation

With Idaho’s already significant investment in residential and commercial developments, this summer saw an average of 600 unique construction job postings online monthly. The pipeline is full of federally funded road, bridge, and broadband expansion projects that have yet to begin employment. The prognosis is favorable for construction workers and other businesses.
